Loretta, Castro a go for NLCS
October 15, 2009
Mark Loretta had only one plate appearance for the Los Angeles Dodgers in their three-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2009 National League Division Series. But it’s likely the significance and timeliness of his one hit were a factor when Manager Joe Torre penciled the former St. Francis High standout onto the active roster for the National League Championship Series against the Philadelphia Phillies beginning at 5:07 p.m. PDT today at Dodger Stadium.

Loretta, who made the team for the best-of-seven series with the defending World Series champions, along with fellow utitlity infielder and Glendale resident Juan Castro, singled in the winning run with the bases loaded and two outs in the Dodgers’ 3-2 Game Two victory on Oct. 8.
Castro, who, like Loretta, is making his second career appearance in the postseason, did not enter a game in the Division Series.

Salvo sisters making stop in SoCal
October 14, 2009
Rebecca Salvo and Rachel Salvo, who both graduated from Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy in 2006, are set to make their return to Southern California, as they will participate in the Cal Lutheran Tournament in Thousand Oaks on Friday and Saturday as members of the Haverford College women’s volleyball team.
The Fords are scheduled to take on Pomona-Pitzer and Claremont-Mudd Scripps at Gilbert Arena on Friday before facing La Verne and host Cal Lutheran on Saturday.
The Salvos led Sacred Heart to a CIF Division IV-AA semifinal appearance in 2006 before embarking on distinguished careers at Haverford, where they are now seniors. The Fords are currently 19-2 on the season and 5-0 in the Centennial Conference.

During the fifth week of high school football, there were plenty of highlight performances. Here are the week’s best …
1) Dietrich Riley, St. Francis High running back: In just over a half of work, Riley tallied 110 yards rushing in 13 carries, averaging 8.5 yards per carry, and scored three rushing touchdowns in the Golden Knights’ 42-7 romp against El Rancho. He also added a 30-yard reception.

Vaqueros may have to do without Dunn
October 9, 2009
Glendale Community College women’s cross-country Coach Eddie Lopez acknowledged on Friday that sophomore captain Katie Dunn, who has participated in just one of the team’s six races this season while battling back and hip problems, may not return to the Vaqueros at all this season.
Dunn cheered on the Vaqueros in street clothes, as the team ran to an overwhelming victory in the Western State Conference preview meet at Pierce College on Friday afternoon.
“She might be out for the year,” said Lopez of Dunn, a member of Saugus High’s 2007 state championship squad, who led the Vaqueros’ charge to Western State Conference and Southern California titles and a runner-up finish at state as a freshman. “Today she told me she still hurts.”
