The Glendale Community College men’s and women’s basketball schedules were released this week.

The men’s team will tip off  its schedule Nov. 6 by hosting the Tip-Off Classic.

The tournament will conclude Nov. 7, though it’s not been announced what other teams are involved in the tournament.

Glendale college will also host the Vaquero Classic from Dec. 16-19 and will kick off Western State Conference South Division action Jan. 6 on the road against Los Angeles Valley College.

The women’s program will not start until Nov. 20, when it hosts the Vaquero Shootout from Nov. 20-22.

Teams and times have yet to be determined.

Like the men’s team, the women’s squad will begin conference action Jan. 6 at L.A. Valley College.

Rachel and Rebecca Salvo, former standouts on the Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy volleyball team, returned to their former facility as members of the Haverford College women’s volleyball team this week.

The Salvos and Haverford practiced Wednesday and Thursday at Flintridge Sacred Heart in preparation for the California Lutheran University Tournament in Thousand Oaks.

The sisters are former All-Area and All-Mission League standouts and have excelled at Haverford the past several seasons.

The tournament begins today and concludes Saturday.

Mark Loretta had only one plate appearance for the Los Angeles Dodgers in their three-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2009 National League Division Series. But it’s likely the significance and timeliness of his one hit were a factor when Manager Joe Torre penciled the former St. Francis High standout onto the active roster for the National League Championship Series against the Philadelphia Phillies beginning at 5:07 p.m. PDT today at Dodger Stadium.

Loretta, who made the team for the best-of-seven series with the defending World Series champions, along with fellow utitlity infielder and Glendale resident Juan Castro, singled in the winning run with the bases loaded and two outs in the Dodgers’ 3-2 Game Two victory on Oct. 8.

Castro, who, like Loretta, is making his second career appearance in the postseason, did not enter a game in the Division Series.

Just received word from Vito “Casper” Gasparyan’s camp at Fortune Gym and he is tentatively scheduled to fight on Nov. 6 at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario.

The Glendale boxer is looking to rebound from a controversial six-r0und unanimous decision loss to Jermell Charlo on Aug. 22 in Houston. Gasparyan is currently 11-2-4 with five knockouts. His opponent is yet to be named.

Recent Crescenta Valley High graduate and three-time All-Area Softball Player of the Year Baillie Kirker is already making news, literally, as part of the University of Arizona softball team.

Rebecca Salvo and Rachel Salvo, who both graduated from Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy in 2006, are set to make their return to Southern California, as they will participate in the Cal Lutheran Tournament in Thousand Oaks on Friday and Saturday as members of the Haverford College women’s volleyball team.

The Fords are scheduled to take on Pomona-Pitzer and Claremont-Mudd Scripps at Gilbert Arena on Friday before facing La Verne and host Cal Lutheran on Saturday.

The Salvos led Sacred Heart to a CIF Division IV-AA semifinal appearance in 2006 before embarking on distinguished careers at Haverford, where they are now seniors. The Fords are currently 19-2 on the season and 5-0 in the Centennial Conference.
